Día de los Muertos Procession & Festival of Altars 2026

A Bouquet Of Flowers And Pictures

Monday, November 2, 2026 November 2, 2026 Hotel Caza

The Día de los Muertos celebration in San Francisco is a powerful, non-commercial community tradition that honors the cycle of life and death. Organized by the Marigold Project and local community leaders, the event transforms the Mission District into a sacred space of remembrance, healing, and cultural pride.

Event Highlights:

  • Festival of Altars: Explore Garfield Square, where the park is filled with hundreds of personal and community ofrendas. These intricate displays feature marigolds, photos, incense, and the favorite foods of the deceased.
  • Ritual Procession: Join thousands in a solemn, candlelit walk through the neighborhood. Led by traditional Danza Azteca groups and drum contingents, the procession is a moving tribute to those who have passed.
  • Traditional Arts: Experience the vibrant colors of skeletal face painting (Catrinas), traditional Mesoamerican music, and poetry readings throughout the evening.
  • Community Healing: Unlike a typical parade, this is a participatory ritual. Attendees are encouraged to bring flowers or candles and join in the collective mourning and celebration of life.
