Exploring San Francisco by Bike: Scenic Waterfront Routes

September 15, 2026 Explore San Francisco

San Francisco is a city made for exploring by bike, with relatively flat paths connecting Fisherman's Wharf with Fort Mason, the Marina, Crissy Field, and some of the city's best Golden Gate Bridge viewpoints.

For visitors looking for bike rides in San Francisco, staying near the waterfront makes it easy. Hotel Caza is located in Fisherman's Wharf, putting you close to the Embarcadero, Aquatic Park, Fort Mason, and the cycling route toward the Golden Gate Bridge. Better yet, guests can take advantage of the hotel's complimentary Caza Cruiser bicycles, included with the daily Destination Fee.

Start at Hotel Caza in Fisherman's Wharf

The easiest place to begin your ride is right outside Hotel Caza at Fisherman's Wharf.  If you want to make a morning of it, grab coffee first, then head toward the waterfront. You can stop at Pier 39 to see the sea lions or continue west toward Aquatic Park. From there, the route becomes more focused on open waterfront scenery.

Route 1: Fisherman's Wharf to Fort Mason

For a shorter bike ride in San Francisco, head west from Fisherman's Wharf toward Fort Mason.

This route is a good introduction to cycling along the Bay because you can enjoy the waterfront without committing to a long ride. Leave Fisherman's Wharf and pass Aquatic Park, where you can see boats and swimmers in the water, then continue toward Fort Mason.

The former military site sits at the edge of the Marina District and offers open green space and views across the Bay. Take your time here. Lock up the bikes and walk toward the waterfront, or stop for a break before continuing.

Route 2: Fort Mason to Crissy Field

For scenic views, the ride from Fort Mason through the Marina to Crissy Field is one of the best choices.

Continue west along the waterfront toward Marina Green, where sailboats fill the harbor and the Golden Gate Bridge comes into view. From there, follow the path toward Crissy Field.

Crissy Field was once a military airfield and is now a popular waterfront recreation area with smooth cycling and walking trails. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy describes the route as an easy two-mile round trip with views of the Golden Gate, Alcatraz and the North and East Bays.

Bring water, take a few photos, and give yourself time to appreciate the changing views as you approach the Golden Gate Bridge.

Route 3: Crissy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge

Want a longer ride? For a four-hour outing, riding toward the bridge and returning to Fisherman's Wharf can make a satisfying half-day adventure. Continue from Crissy Field toward the Golden Gate Bridge.

This is the route to choose when you want the combination of waterfront scenery, city views, and one of San Francisco's most recognizable landmarks. As you ride west, the Golden Gate Bridge becomes increasingly dramatic.

The waterfront trail provides several opportunities to stop before reaching the bridge. Fort Point, located beneath the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, is another worthwhile viewpoint.

Once you reach the bridge, check the current cycling and pedestrian access rules before crossing. If you decide to continue across the bridge, allow additional time for the ride and return journey.

Route 4: A Relaxed Ride Along the Marina

If you want a slower afternoon, ride from Fisherman's Wharf toward Marina Green and spend time exploring the Marina waterfront. This route is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy the scenery without spending hours in the saddle.

Marina Green is a 74-acre waterfront park stretching between the Presidio and Fort Mason. The area offers views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands, with sailboats lining the marina.

Stop for lunch or coffee in the Marina District, then ride back toward Fisherman's Wharf. You can also detour toward the Presidio if you have additional time.

Turn Your Bike Ride Into a Waterfront Day

One of the benefits of exploring San Francisco by bike is the freedom to combine several experiences without spending the entire day in transit.

Start with breakfast near Fisherman's Wharf, pick up your Caza Cruiser, and ride toward Crissy Field. Stop for photos along the way and spend some time at the waterfront. Continue toward the Golden Gate Bridge, then return through the Marina.

On the way back, you can stop for lunch around Fort Mason or the Marina before continuing to Fisherman's Wharf. Once you return to Hotel Caza, there is no need to rush back out. Take advantage of the hotel's year-round heated outdoor pool or Game Zone and give yourself some downtime after the ride.

What to Know Before You Ride

A little preparation will make your San Francisco cycling adventure more enjoyable.

Start by checking the weather and bringing layers. San Francisco's waterfront can be breezy, even when temperatures are comfortable elsewhere in the city.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring water, and use the bike's equipment as instructed. Stay alert around pedestrians and intersections, and follow posted signs and designated cycling routes.
